John P. Huggard

In 1971, John Huggard graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with an undergraduate degree in economics (Phi Beta Kappa). In 1975, he graduated from the law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was published in N.C. Law Review. After graduation, John began a private law practice. In 1988, he received a master’s degree from Duke University. John is currently the senior member in the Raleigh, North Carolina law firm of Huggard, Obiol & Blake, PLLC.

From 1975 to the present, John’s practice has been centered on estate planning, taxation and securities litigation and appeals. He is a Board Certified Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate law and also a NCDRC Certified Superior Court Mediator. John is a member of all trial and appellate courts in North Carolina. While at the university, he conducted research on topics including mutual funds and variable annuities. He has published articles in financial magazines on these topics. John was a member of the university’s Academy of Outstanding Teachers and retired in 2005 as an Alumni Distinguished Professor.

Since his retirement from the university, he continues to practice law and occasionally teaches a tax course at the local law school. Mr. Huggard serves as an expert witness in both court cases and Finra arbitration matters.

John is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC). He often lectures to professional groups on a wide range of subjects, including estate planning, taxation and investments.

John has written two books on estate administration and one book on trusts. In addition, he has written training manuals for financial advisors dealing with variable annuities and mutual funds. From August of 1964 to September of 1968, John served on active duty with the United States Marine Corps, including a tour of duty in Vietnam as an infantry platoon sergeant. In 1975, he received a direct commission in the Navy as a JAG officer and served in a reserve capacity with the Navy until his retirement as a captain in 2005.

John is a NCDRC Certified Superior Court Mediator. He is also a NCDRC Certified Superior Court Clerk Mediator and a North Carolina State Bar certified Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate law. In addition to his law license, he maintains a life insurance license and real estate broker’s license. John is also a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and a Certified Life Underwriter (CLU).
